May 5th is Children's Day (子供の日) in Japan and that brings out the sights of huge flying kites (大凧) and carp shaped windsocks (鯉幟). It also means that there's only 10 days left to get your order in for this month's shipment! We have some special treats to celebrate what every child loves: candy :)
Traditionally Children's day has been reserved for boys only, with families hanging flying carp outside their house representing the males of the household - a large black carp representing the father at the top with one or more colored carp below for each son. These days the black carp is still reserved for the father, but regardless of gender everyone in the family gets a carp, each with a unique color. If you're in Japan on May 5th, you can find many festivals to enjoy Children's Day like the one shown in these photos at Sagamihara just outside Tokyo.
